Piping and Sheet Metal Estimator

Job Summary:

Allied Mechanical Services is hiring a detail-oriented and experienced Piping/Sheet Metal Estimator to join our team in either our Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids office. We are looking for a candidate who is skilled in estimating for either piping or sheet metal, but a combination of both is highly valued. This is a full-time, on-site position. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical construction and a proven ability to prepare accurate, competitive, and timely estimates for complex projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review project plans, specifications, and other documents to prepare detailed cost estimates for piping, sheet metal, and other mechanical systems.
  • Perform quantity take-offs for materials, equipment, and labor requirements.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate quotes from vendors and subcontractors for materials and services.
  • Develop clear and detailed scopes of work and project cost breakdowns.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams to ensure estimates meet project requirements.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits to assess project conditions.
  • Identify potential risks, value engineering opportunities, and constructability considerations.
  • Maintain historical cost data to improve the accuracy of future estimates.
  • Assist in preparing proposals, bid forms, and presentations for clients.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, with a focus on piping and/or sheet metal systems.
  • A strong understanding of HVAC, piping, plumbing, and sheet metal systems in commercial and industrial construction.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, specifications, and construction documents, including P&IDs and isometrics.
  • Familiarity with estimating software such as Trimble, FastPIPE, FastDUCT, QuoteSoft, or similar.
  • Knowledge of labor productivity rates, fabrication methods, and installation techniques for both piping and sheet metal.
  • Excellent analytical, math, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Field experience in piping or sheet metal installation.
  • Experience with design-build or negotiated mechanical projects.
  • A degree or certification in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
