Spectrum Health Blodgett
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Contract: Fully Designed & Engineered
OVERVIEW
Project Summary
The expansion at Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids encompassed three new patient floors, one OR/Recovery Floor, and a new basement area housing essential utilities. This basement area facilitated the installation of eight new air handlers, piping, and ductwork, connecting seamlessly to existing hospital utilities via a tunnel area.
Key systems, such as steam, condensate, chilled water, and medical gas, required several shutdowns and connections to integrate with the existing infrastructure, all accomplished without disrupting hospital operations. The patient floors were outfitted with plumbing, HVAC, and medical gas systems, including two specialty isolation rooms on the third floor for infection control, necessitating additional standalone controls.
The new OR/Recovery floor was equipped with specialized HVAC and medical gas systems, with careful construction considerations to meet the stringent requirements for surgical environments. Leveraging a Building Information Modeling system facilitated the coordination of utilities among trades in a 3D model, streamlining installation for enhanced efficiency and accuracy. This approach also ensured precise as-builts for project documentation upon completion.
