South Christian High School

Location: Byron Center, MI

Contract: Design Assist

OVERVIEW

Project Summary

Our involvement in the construction of this new high school encompassed the installation of mechanical piping for heating hot water systems, chilled water systems, natural gas mains, and snowmelt piping. We prioritized completing the chilled water system by summer 2018 to facilitate gym floor installation and ensured all work was finished by December 2018 for second-semester move-in.

A significant enhancement for the new school included the installation of two 250-ton air-cooled chillers, providing air conditioning, a feature absent in the old school. Additionally, 14,000 square feet of snowmelt was added to the sidewalks leading to the main entrances, addressing Michigan winters’ challenges. The school’s heating water system is powered by two 6 million BTU high-efficiency gas-fired condensing Viessmann boilers, posing maneuvering challenges due to their weight. This project, in the works for nearly two decades under the campaign “building with a purpose,” held personal significance for many involved, as contractors had deep ties to the community. It was a privilege to contribute to a community that had impacted the lives of many involved.
