Holland Hospital
Location: Holland, MI
Contract: Fully Designed & Engineered
OVERVIEW
Project Summary
This project encompassed the construction of a new Emergency Department, Critical Care building, and substantial renovation of existing mechanical systems across various sections of the hospital. Spanning a three-year timeline, the expansions and upgrades aimed to enhance healthcare delivery within the facility.
In the autumn of 2004, the hospital’s Boiler House underwent the removal and subsequent reinstallation of its chilled water system, crucial for operation before the onset of the spring 2005 cooling season. This endeavor involved upgrading all piping and equipment to accommodate increased capacity for the new expansions, including the integration of a new cooling tower and a 500-ton capacity chiller.
The Emergency Department Expansion, totaling 41,200 square feet, encompassed both lower and upper-level additions to the existing Emergency Department. A new Mechanical Equipment Penthouse servicing the expansion introduced two additional air-handling units and mechanical systems, all executed without compromising patient care in the existing Emergency Department directly below.
Similarly, the 74,000 square feet expansion for the Critical Care Unit and Neonatal Nursery presented challenges, requiring the installation of three new air handlers, mechanical systems, and a medical gas system. Careful coordination ensured that units were delivered and slid into place before the enclosure of the building’s side opening.
Operating within the constraints of a fully functional hospital posed a unique challenge, necessitating meticulous planning to prioritize patient care over construction activities. Despite these challenges, the project was completed without any unexpected major disruptions to patient care or hospital operations. In 2008, Holland Hospital emerged with a modernized facility, poised to serve the healthcare needs of the entire Holland area.
