OVERVIEW
Project Summary
Phase 1: Biodigestion with CHP
The new Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility pioneers sustainable infrastructure with its cutting-edge Biodigestion project and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology. This innovative facility treats wastewater while generating renewable energy by converting organic waste into biogas through anaerobic digestion. The biogas, rich in methane, is used to produce both heat and electricity, maximizing energy efficiency. Notably, the facility can condition digester gas for sale to DTE, contributing renewable energy to the local grid and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This approach makes the facility a net energy producer, setting a new standard for wastewater management and renewable energy generation while embodying environmental stewardship and technological innovation.
Phase 2: Renewable Natural Gas
The Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility is leading the way in sustainability with its innovative Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) project. By capturing and refining biogas from the biodigestion process, the facility transforms waste into a clean energy source. This RNG, meeting strict quality standards, can be injected into the natural gas grid or used as transportation fuel, offering environmental benefits and revenue opportunities. This visionary initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also showcases the facility’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, setting a new standard for wastewater management.
Phase 3: Phosphorus Recovery
The Grand Rapids Water Resource Recovery Facility leads in sustainable wastewater management with its Phosphorus Recovery project. This initiative extracts phosphorus from biodigestion, preventing struvite formation that can clog pipes. By employing advanced technologies, the project captures phosphorus, mitigating risks and promoting resource reuse. This proactive approach ensures smooth operations, aligning with sustainability goals and minimizing environmental impact.
