Unique Features: The Chemistry Building, comprised of three primary floors, covers approximately 75,000 square feet and provides classroom and laboratory space to over 1000 students and faculty. From the submittal stage through final performance testing, the Chemistry Building was a 100% third party commissioned project. A coordinated effort was required by all trades in order to meet the aggressive timeline established by the university, as working space was extremely tight. Per the contract, coordination drawings for mechanical, HVAC and electrical work were submitted and approved prior to commencing the work. As part of the overall safety emphasis in the building, each lab was equipped with a dedicated corrosion resistant exhaust system. Also included in each lab were fume hood and experiment stations housing utilities-water, air, natural gas and laboratory de-ionized water. A Polypropoline Fusion Acid Waste System was installed, providing a safe method of revoking chemicals. Potentially hazardous materials from the labs are drained through pipe leading into a limestone basin that ultimately neutralizes the materials before being discharged into the sanitary sewer. A large R.O/D.I Water system was installed in electrofusion Polypropylebne piping to supply Regent grade II water to all the labs to meet high purity experiment requirements. The final commissioning for system verification and functional performance testing on all mechanical systems provided a very successful turnover process to the owner that included a fully electronic set of all operation and maintenance manuals, resulting in an extremely low rate of call back and warranty items.
