Unique Features: Allied Mechanical has completed an important addition to Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids. This addition involved adding three (3) new patient floors, one (1) new OR/Recovery Floor, and a new basement area.

The basement are included all of the new utilities to serve the new addition. Eight (8) new air handlers were installed along with the piping and ductwork for the new air handlers. The basement are also included a tunnel area where the new utilities connected to the existing hospital utilities. Several shutdowns/connections of key systems were required to connect to the existing utilities. These systems included steam, condensate, chilled water, and medical gas systems. These shutdowns had to be accomplished without distributing the hospitals operation due to life/safety considerations.

The three (3) new patient floors included adding plumbing, HVAC, and medical gas systems to service each patient room. Two (2) specialty isolation rooms were added to floor 3 in the event that a patient required isolation for infection control purposes. Additional stand-alone controls were required for these isolation rooms to maintain a safe environment.

The new OR/Recovery floor included specialty HVAC and medical gas systems to service the new OR area. Special considerations had to be given to the construction of this area to be used as an OR/Recovery floor.

The project was actually built by a building Information Modeling system that involved coordinating all of the utilities with all of the trades in a 3D model before installation of the systems. This allowed the installation of the systems in a faster and more accurate process than is traditionally done. In the end, it also provided for accurate as-builts to be furnished at the end of the project.
